Mr. Luther J. Johnson

September 29, 1941 – February 4, 2023

 

Mr. Luther James Johnson, 81, of Anna, Texas departed this earthly life on the morning of Saturday, February 4, 2023 in Denton, Texas. Mr. Johnson was born the seventh of 12 children on September 29, 1941 to the late Mr. Howard Johnson, Sr. and the late Mrs. Martha Vanice Wise Johnson in Lewisville, Arkansas. Luther was also affectionately called “LJ” and “Gene” by family members and friends.

Luther confessed his hope in Christ at an early age and was a member of St. James Baptist Church in Lewisville, Arkansas until he graduated from Foster High School in 1959. He attended and graduated from Arkansas AM&N College, now known as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. While attending college, he participated in the track and field program. His college major was in science. Following his college graduation in 1969, Luther began his teaching career in Cotton Plant Arkansas School District.

On May 20, 1972, Luther James Johnson married Evelyn Dolores Yancy in Dallas County, Texas. To this union two children were born: Yantisa Johnson and LaRoi Johnson. Luther was preceded in death by Evelyn when she passed away on May 29, 1999.

For over three decades, Luther taught in Dallas Independent School District. He taught science and drove school buses. He also worked in recreational facilities for youth. Following his retirement from teaching, he drove school buses for Durham D&M School Services in the McKinney Independent School District through 2022.

Luther became a member of First Baptist Church of Hamilton Park in Richardson, Texas where he served in the men’s chorus. As a member of the men’s chorus, he traveled to minister in songs to other congregations in and out of the State.

Luther loved to talk about sports and the politics. He would often call his family and friends to give his opinions and inquire about their opinions on these matters.

Luther was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: George L. Johnson, Howard Johnson, Jr., Charlie Johnson, Claudie Johnson, Sr., Casey Johnson, Sr., Bobby Joe Johnson; and his sisters: Ruthie L. Johnson, and Inetta L. Johnson Hostler.

Survivors include: his daughter, Ms. Yantisa Johnson of Anna, TX; his son, Mr. LaRoi Johnson of Denton, TX; two sisters: Ms. Louisa Johnson Smith of Augusta, AR and Ms. Rose Johnson of Marion, AR; one brother: Mr. Roy (Sharlene) Johnson of San Antonio, TX; and sister-in laws, a brother-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The following services have been scheduled: Wake, on February 16, 2023 at 3:00 p.m., ending at 8:00 p.m., at Evergreen Funeral Home-Dallas, 6449 University Hills, Dallas, TX 75241. Celebration of Life will be on February 18, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Hamilton-Davis Funeral Home Chapel, 415 E. First St., Stamps, AR 71860. Interment will be immediately following the service at the Wise Cemetery in Lewisville, AR.
